Movement Alphabet

The prime actions ('verbs') and concepts of which movement is comprised. Each Movement Alphabet symbol is a motif, a representation of an entire constellation of ideas in a single concept for the mover to interpret in a myriad of ways.

Presence or Absence of Movement

1.

Any Action

Movement of some kind, a change

 

2.

 

Stillness

 

Suspension of motion, sustainment of an arrested activity


An action may be concerned with or may concentrate on:

Anatomical Possibilities

3.

Any Flexion

Contracting, folding, closing in, making smaller, narrowing

 

4.

 

Any Extension

 

Lengthening, reaching out, enlarging, opening out

 

5.

 

Any Rotation

 

Any revolution, turn of the body-as-a-whole, or of parts of the body


Movement Ideas or Concentrations

6.

Any Traveling

Any path (straight or curved) moving from one situation to another

7.

Any Direction

Axial movement up, down, to the right, left, forward, backward, etc.

8.

Support

An action ending in a new support, transference of weight, a step

9.

A Spring

Any aerial step leaving the ground and returning to it

10.

Balance

Equilibrium, centering of center of gravity over a static or moving support

11.

Falling

Center of gravity moves beyond base of support


Specific or Relative Description

12.

Destination

Statement of ending situation, position or state to be reached, designated aim

13.

Motion Toward

Approaching, moving toward a person, object, direction or state of being

14.

Motion Away

Leaving, withdrawing from a person, object, direction, or state of being; a gesture away from a person
